For parents welcoming a newborn, planning for a photo session can feel like just one more thing on an already full plate—between preparing the nursery, packing your hospital bag, and counting down the days until you meet your little one. To make it easier, I’m sharing my top prep tips so you can feel calm, comfortable, and ready for your Augusta GA Newborn Photography session.

How to prepare for your Augusta newborn photo session –
Scheduling
Newborn sessions are best when they occur 7-14 days after the baby is born. This is when babies are most fresh, flexible, sleepy, and likely without baby acne. I coordinate the date and time of newborn sessions after the baby is born, once mom, dad, and baby are back home. For best light indoors (and a sleepy baby) sessions are typically scheduled in the morning.
Choosing a Location
In-Home
An in-home session gives that feeling of comfort of being in your own space, and showcases a newly decorated nursery.
Studio
When your home doesn’t have the lighting or aesthetic you’re hoping for—or if you’d prefer to skip the prep—consider a studio for a clean, minimalist space.
Historic Home
Local clients can also opt for a session in a historic home, featuring rooms styled with classic furnishings—creating a cozy, home-like atmosphere without the lived-in clutter.
Outdoor
For those drawn to the outdoors, portraits in open, natural spaces, especially during golden hour, will forever be timeless.

Styling With A Color Palette In Mind
Walk through your home, taking note of your decor and color preferences. This helps when planning your session wardrobe to perfectly complement your home’s unique style.
Envisioning Artwork In Your Home
Ask, “Where do I see myself enjoying these images?”
You’re creating a visual narrative that extends from your photo session to your living space. Picture your favorite moments adorning your walls, or tucked into an album to be flipped through by tiny hands.

Coordinate Outfits
Outfits will look most cohesive on camera when the color palette and wardrobe pieces complement each other without “matching” exactly. By choosing pieces that work well together, you’ll create more visual interest while allowing each family member’s personality to shine through.
Not sure where to start with the color palette? Take inspiration from your home’s colors and style! Since these photos will likely be displayed in your home, looking at the existing colors and textures in your space can be a great way to guide your outfit choices.
Prepping Little (about to be Big) Ones
Setting expectations before your session is the key to great photos and happy kids. If your little ones are old enough to understand you, prepare them for what’s to come before the session starts. Explain how much the photos mean to you so they know to be on their best behavior. A fun treat afterward, like lunch at their favorite spot or an ice cream cone, can be a great incentive!
When It Comes Down To It
Remember to give yourself (and them) grace. Even if things don’t go perfectly, rest assured that a professional photographer knows how to capture beautiful moments no matter what.
