A while back, I saw a post about how you’re not supposed to keep mailing cardboard boxes in your house (yes, like Amazon ones!). Apparently, they can harbor some unwanted stow-aways—namely cockroaches. Yuck.

I’d meant to mention it to my husband, but since we usually break boxes down right away for recycling—or the girls whisk them off for rocket ships, robots, or rowboats—I wasn’t too worried.

Fast forward to last week. I’d decided to return an Amazon order and popped the item back into its small box. I set it on my dresser to show Clark later. You can see where this is going.

That night, while breaking down boxes in the kitchen, I remembered the warning and mentioned it to him. We shrugged it off, and then headed upstairs for bed. But when I grabbed that little return box to show him, I saw it—a dreaded roach moving inside the box.

I shrieked. He jumped. We both freaked out. The box got dumped into the bathtub, and I smashed that ugly little body before it had a chance to crawl free.

The Uninvited Surprises

Nobody invites a roach into their home (gross). But some surprises show up whether you’re ready for them or not.

And isn’t that a little like life? So much of what happens—whether it’s the joyful chaos of kids growing up, or the bittersweet passage of time—arrives without warning. Some surprises you’d rather forget. Others you’ll want to hold onto forever.

That’s what family photographs are for. Not just pretty pictures, but a way to embrace the surprises you do want to remember. The silly smiles, the sticky hands, the milestones that sneak up faster than you thought.

Holding Onto the Right Things

Photos can’t stop life from moving forward (or keep the creepy-crawlies out of your Amazon boxes). But they can help you hold onto the parts you want to keep—the laughter, the connection, the beauty in these everyday, fleeting moments.

So while you can’t control what shows up uninvited, you can choose what memories you’ll hold close. And I’d be honored to help you do just that.
